A Resume also commonly known as a Curriculum Vitae, is an organized document describing one’s self followed by a person’s relevant job experiences, education, achievements, awards & rewards gained, etc.

It was a wise man who said “First impression is the best impression”,

If you are a new entrant in the job market, you need to perfect your resume before applying for your 1st job
Probably nobody ever secured a job solely through a simple scribbled letter of application. But a well written presentation of your qualification and experience can help to point out your merits to an interested employer. What is more, when you’re competing for a job opening, a well written presentation can create a strong impression that may prejudice the interviewer in your favour. You are, in fact, “selling your working capacity” to a prospective employer. Therefore, put yourself in the reader’s place and plan your approach.

According to  a recent survey conducted on job preferences it has been revealed that the civil services, which used to be the number one preference of job seekers till very recently, stands second in priority. Private sector jobs, besides, offering heavy compensation packages and liberal perks, also promise rapid career growth for the right type of candidate. These jobs are mostly advertised in leading newspapers and magazines like India Today, Business India, among others. Candidates aspiring for such jobs have to respond to these advertisements along with their brief bio-data’s. Of late it has been observed that certain reputed companies are advertising “Walk in Interviews”.

This is because these companies are no longer interested in scanning through long bio-data’s to shortlist candidates because it is time consuming and expensive exercise. For such jobs, candidates are expected to carry a brief bio-data along with them to the interview.

For the purpose of securing jobs in private sector organizations, among the most important communication you have to write include:
1)    Preparation of your bio-Data;
2)    The Letter to accompany your Bio-Data;
3)    The Thank you letter for the interview; and
4)    The letter of acceptance r rejection of the job offer.

A standard CV might have the following points

* At the top of the CV you should have your Personal details such as name in bold type, address and contact numbers and if the subject has one, an e-mail address. Photos are not required at all, unless requested.

* Then after personal details come “A personal profile”, written in either the first or the third person, that is about a short paragraph about the job seeker. This should be purely factual, and free of any opinion about the writer’s qualities such as “enthusiastic”, “highly motivated”, etc.

* The main part of resume – A bulletin list of the job seeker’s key skills or rather, professional assets – skills alone are somewhat unsophisticated.

* A list of job seeker’s work experience in reverse order (start from currently working experience), including his or her current role. The CV should account for the writer’s entire career history but it should describe achievements rather than duties.

* A list of job seeker’s education or training in reverse order, including a list of his or her qualifications such as his or her academic qualifications (GCSEs, A-Levels, Higher, degrees etc.) and his or her professional qualifications (NVQs and memberships of professional organizations etc.). If the job seeker has just left the place of education, the work experience and education are reversed.

* Second section of resume consist of Date of birth, gender if you have an ambiguous first name, whether you have a driving license used to be standard – but nothing is required and you should not waste space on trivia.

* The job seeker’s hobbies and interests (optional)

It is obligatory for it to be typed or word-processed, not hand-written.
